In short

UK bed sizes run from a 3ft Single to a 6ft Super King. A Single is 90 × 190 cm. A Small Double is 120 × 190 cm (4ft). A Double is 135 × 190 cm (4ft 6). A King is 150 × 200 cm (5ft). A Super King is 180 × 200 cm. Always check the centimetres.

UK Single (3ft × 6ft 3in)
90 × 190 cm

One sleeper. Length is 190 cm, not 200 cm.

UK Double (4ft 6in × 6ft 3in)
135 × 190 cm

About 67.5 cm of width each if two adults share it evenly.

UK King (5ft × 6ft 6in)
150 × 200 cm

15 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a UK Double.

UK Super King (6ft × 6ft 6in)
180 × 200 cm

About 90 cm each for two adults. That is a Single's width.

How it works

UK bed sizes chart drawn to scale, from Small Single 75 × 190 cm to Emperor 200 × 200 cm, with each size in feet, centimetres and inches
Every UK size drawn to the same scale. Kings and larger are 10 cm longer than Doubles and Singles. Always confirm centimetres on the label.

Which UK mattress size do I need?

One person usually fits a 3ft Single at 90 × 190 cm. Two adults usually want a 5ft King at 150 × 200 cm or a 6ft Super King at 180 × 200 cm. A 4ft 6 Double at 135 × 190 cm is tight for two. People taller than about 185 cm usually want the 200 cm length on King or Super King.

Two adults: start with 5ft King 150 × 200 cm. Choose 6ft Super King 180 × 200 cm if you want more width.

What are the standard UK bed sizes?

Each UK bed size has a name and a width in feet. Length is either 190 cm or 200 cm. The chart below gives each size in feet, centimetres and inches. Centimetres are the numbers to trust.

UK size Feet (W × L) cm (W × L) Inches (W × L)
Small Single 2ft 6in × 6ft 3in 75 × 190 29.5 × 74.8
Single 3ft × 6ft 3in 90 × 190 35.4 × 74.8
Small Double 4ft × 6ft 3in 120 × 190 47.2 × 74.8
Double 4ft 6in × 6ft 3in 135 × 190 53.1 × 74.8
King 5ft × 6ft 6in 150 × 200 59.1 × 78.7
Super King 6ft × 6ft 6in 180 × 200 70.9 × 78.7
Emperor (varies by maker) 6ft 6in × 6ft 6in 200 × 200 78.7 × 78.7
Cot bed (varies by cot) about 2ft 4in × 4ft 7in 70 × 140 27.6 × 55.1

The feet column shows rounded shop names, not exact maths. A true 3ft is 91.4 cm, but a 3ft Single is 90 cm. A true 6ft 6in is 198 cm, but King length is 200 cm. The inches column is the true conversion: centimetres ÷ 2.54, to one decimal place.

In short: Small Single to Double are 190 cm long. King and bigger are 200 cm long.

How do bed sizes in feet match UK names?

UK shops still sell beds by feet. The feet number is the width. Here is the quick match:

  • 2ft 6 is a Small Single, 75 × 190 cm.
  • 3ft is a Single, 90 × 190 cm.
  • 4ft is a Small Double, 120 × 190 cm.
  • 4ft 6 is a Double, 135 × 190 cm.
  • 5ft is a King, 150 × 200 cm.
  • 6ft is a Super King, 180 × 200 cm.
  • 6ft 6 is usually an Emperor, about 200 × 200 cm.

Do not buy a 5ft sheet for a 4ft 6 mattress. Do not assume a 6ft frame from another country is 180 × 200 cm. Read the centimetres on the label.

What size is a 4ft 6 bed?

A 4ft 6 bed is a UK Double. The mattress is 135 × 190 cm. In feet and inches that is 4ft 6in × 6ft 3in, or 53.1 × 74.8 inches. When a UK shop says “double bed”, this is the size it usually means. It is not the common EU Double of 140 × 200 cm.

What is a Small Double or 4ft bed?

A Small Double is a 4ft bed. The mattress is 120 × 190 cm, or 4ft × 6ft 3in. It is 30 cm wider than a Single. It is 15 cm narrower than a Double.

Some UK shops call it a “queen”. That is only a shop nickname. A US Queen is much bigger, at about 152 × 203 cm. Two adults get about 60 cm each on a Small Double. Many people use it as a roomy bed for one.

What size is a Small Single or 2ft 6 bed?

A Small Single is 75 × 190 cm, or 2ft 6in × 6ft 3in. It is 15 cm narrower than a Single and the same length. It suits children, box rooms and some bunk beds.

Watch the name at IKEA. IKEA UK uses “Small Single” for an 80 × 200 cm mattress. That is not the usual UK Small Single of 75 × 190 cm.

No. UK size names are industry practice, not law. The National Bed Federation (NBF) is the trade body for UK bed makers. It says there is no legal standard on size tolerances for mattresses and divan bases. A tolerance is how far a real product may differ from its label. Accepted industry practice is plus or minus 20 mm on the stated length and width. That note was checked on the NBF page on 25 September 2026.

So a King that measures 149 cm is still a normal UK King. A “King” at 160 cm is a different, EU-style size. See UK vs EU sizes.

Is a double bed big enough for two adults?

It works, but it is tight. A UK Double is 135 cm wide. Split in half, each adult gets 67.5 cm. A UK Single gives one person 90 cm. So each person on a Double has 22.5 cm less than one Single.

In short: a Double fits two adults, but each gets less room than a child on a Single.

What size bed do two adults need?

Most couples look at a King or a Super King. A King at 150 × 200 cm gives each person 75 cm. A Super King at 180 × 200 cm gives each person 90 cm. Both are 10 cm longer than a Double. People taller than about 185 cm often prefer that 200 cm length.

Sleepers Usual start Width each
One adult 3ft Single, 90 × 190 cm 90 cm
One adult, small room 2ft 6 Small Single, 75 × 190 cm 75 cm
One adult who likes space 4ft Small Double, 120 × 190 cm 120 cm
Two adults, small room 4ft 6 Double, 135 × 190 cm 67.5 cm
Two adults 5ft King, 150 × 200 cm 75 cm
Two adults who want more width 6ft Super King, 180 × 200 cm 90 cm
Two adults who want the most width Emperor, often 200 × 200 cm About 100 cm

The size finder at the top of this page highlights a row for you. It does not replace a tape measure.

King vs Super King: what is the difference?

The difference is width. A UK King is 150 cm wide. A UK Super King is 180 cm wide. Both are 200 cm long. That extra 30 cm gives each of two sleepers 15 cm more.

A Super King also needs a bigger room and a wider path up the stairs. Side-by-side detail: UK King vs Super King.

Do two single beds make a Super King?

Only in width. Two UK Singles side by side are 180 cm wide, like a Super King. But a UK Single is 190 cm long. A Super King is 200 cm long. So two Singles leave a 10 cm gap at the foot of a Super King frame.

Zip-and-link beds fix this. Zip-and-link means two mattresses joined by a zip. Super King zip-and-link halves are usually 90 × 200 cm each, not 90 × 190 cm. Check the brand’s centimetres before you buy.

Two Small Singles work the same way. Side by side they are 150 cm wide, like a King, but still 10 cm short. See couples and zip-and-link and how to join zip-and-link mattresses.

Is a UK King the same as a US Queen?

No, but they are close. A US Queen is 60 × 80 inches, about 152 × 203 cm. A UK King is 150 × 200 cm, about 59 × 79 inches. The US Queen is about 2 cm wider and 3 cm longer.

That small gap is enough for sheets and frames to fit badly. See US mattress sizes and US Queen vs UK King.

What size is an Emperor bed?

An Emperor is usually 200 × 200 cm, or 6ft 6in square. It is the largest size on most UK size charts. It is 20 cm wider than a Super King and the same length.

Emperor is a marketing name, not a fixed size. Some makers use different centimetres, so check the label. Sheets can be harder to find too. See Emperor bed dimensions.

What size is a toddler or cot bed mattress?

A cot bed mattress is often about 70 × 140 cm. A smaller cot mattress is often about 60 × 120 cm. Many toddler beds take the 70 × 140 cm size.

Cots vary, and the mattress must fit snugly. Use the size the cot or bed maker gives. See cot and Small Single sizes and the kids bed size journey.

Will a UK mattress fit an EU or IKEA bed frame?

Often not. EU beds use the same names with different centimetres. A common EU Double is 140 × 200 cm. A common EU King is 160 × 200 cm. A UK Double on a 140 × 200 cm frame leaves gaps at the sides and foot. A UK King on a 160 cm frame leaves about 5 cm each side.

UK size UK cm Common EU size EU cm
Single 90 × 190 EU Single 90 × 200
Double 135 × 190 EU Double 140 × 200
King 150 × 200 EU King 160 × 200
Super King 180 × 200 EU 180 180 × 200

IKEA UK says it sells UK mattress sizes. Its size guide lists the five standard UK sizes. It also lists 90 × 200 cm for bunk, loft and children’s beds. It lists 80 × 200 cm for day beds and 140 × 200 cm for sofa beds. That guide was checked on 25 September 2026.

In short: read the frame’s centimetres, not the shop name. Full pairing rules live in UK vs EU sizes.

What fitted sheet and duvet match each UK size?

Match the mattress plan first. Plan means width × length. Then match pocket depth. The pocket must clear the mattress, the protector and any topper.

A UK “King” sheet is cut for about 150 × 200 cm. It will be short on a 160 cm EU mattress. Duvets use the same UK names, but they are cut larger so they hang over the sides. Read the duvet’s own centimetres.

Mattress Plan (cm) Fitted sheet to look for Duvet to look for
Single 90 × 190 UK Single UK Single
Small Double 120 × 190 UK Small Double / 4ft UK Small Double if sold; else measure
Double 135 × 190 UK Double / 4ft 6 UK Double
King 150 × 200 UK King UK King
Super King 180 × 200 UK Super King UK Super King

Pocket depth lives on UK fitted sheet sizes. TOG and fill live on how to choose a duvet. TOG is a number for how warm a duvet is.

Does mattress depth change the size name?

No. Width × length is the plan size. Depth is a separate measurement. A “deep” King is still 150 × 200 cm on the floor.

Depth changes fitted-sheet fit and how much headboard you see. Read the mattress depth guide before you buy sheets.

How much room do you need around a bed?

Aim for about 50–60 cm of clear floor beside the bed. That is a common target, not a rule. For example, a King is 150 cm wide. With 50 cm on each side, you need about 250 cm of wall before the frame.

Frames can be bigger than the mattress. Headboards, sleigh ends and ottoman lids add more. An ottoman is a storage bed whose base lifts up. See bed footprint and access and how to measure a bedroom for a bed.

How should I measure before I buy?

Measure the old mattress, or the empty base, in centimetres. Write width × length. Measure doorways, stairs and landings for the packed size.

Then match fitted sheets to the mattress centimetres, not to the bed’s shop name. If you are replacing only the mattress, the old centimetres win over the name on the old label.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a king size bed in the UK?

A UK King mattress is 150 cm wide and 200 cm long. Shops sell it as 5ft × 6ft 6in. In inches it is about 59.1 × 78.7. It is 15 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a UK Double.

How wide is a Super King bed in the UK?

A UK Super King is 180 cm wide and 200 cm long. Shops sell it as a 6ft bed. That is the width of two 90 cm Singles, so two adults get about 90 cm each.

How wide is a double bed in the UK?

A UK Double is 135 cm wide and 190 cm long. Shops sell it as a 4ft 6 bed. A common EU Double is 140 × 200 cm, so check the centimetres before you mix a UK mattress with an EU frame.

What is the biggest bed size in the UK?

The Emperor is usually the biggest, at about 200 × 200 cm. It is not a fixed size, so makers vary. Many shops stop at the Super King, which is 180 × 200 cm.

Which UK bed sizes are 200 cm long?

King (150 × 200 cm), Super King (180 × 200 cm) and Emperor (usually 200 × 200 cm) are 200 cm long. Small Single, Single, Small Double and Double are 190 cm long.

Can two adults sleep on a small double bed?

They can, but it is tight. A Small Double is 120 cm wide, so each adult gets about 60 cm. A UK Single gives one person 90 cm. Many people use a Small Double as a roomy bed for one.

What size is a 3ft bed in the UK?

A 3ft bed is a UK Single. The mattress is 90 cm wide by 190 cm long. Shops also write 3ft × 6ft 3in. It is not the 90 × 200 cm Euro single that some frames use.

What UK bed size suits a tall person?

Many people taller than about 185 cm prefer a 200 cm long bed. In UK sizes, that means a King, Super King or Emperor. Single, Small Double and Double mattresses are only 190 cm long.

Is a UK Double the same as a US Full?

Not quite. A US Full is 54 × 75 inches, about 137 × 191 cm. A UK Double is 135 × 190 cm. They are close, but sheets and frames made for one can still fit the other badly.

Is a UK Super King the same as a US King?

No. A US King is 76 × 80 inches, about 193 × 203 cm. A UK Super King is 180 × 200 cm. The US King is about 13 cm wider, so UK Super King sheets will not fit it.

Can I put a UK mattress on an IKEA bed?

Only if the frame's centimetres match. IKEA UK lists the standard UK sizes. Some of its frames take 90 × 200, 80 × 200 or 140 × 200 cm mattresses instead. Read the frame's label before you buy.

What fitted sheet fits a UK King mattress?

Buy a UK King fitted sheet cut for 150 × 200 cm. Then check the pocket depth covers the mattress, protector and any topper. A US or EU “King” sheet is a different cut.
