Tufting pulls cords or buttons through a mattress from face to face. It locks fillings so they cannot migrate. Hand-tufting creates deep dimples and full-depth ties. Micro-quilting mainly stitches the cover and thin toppers without through-ties. Tufting controls filling migration. Quilting mainly controls surface attachment.

Definition. Tufting secures mattress fillings by stitching cords or buttons through the full depth. It compresses layers so fillings cannot shift or migrate.

Hand-tufted mattresses show recessed tuft points where the cord tension compresses the full stack. Micro-quilted surfaces lack those through-depth ties and should not be described as traditionally tufted.
