In short

A hybrid mattress combines a spring core — usually pocket sprung — with foam or latex comfort layers on top. Springs handle alignment and let air move through. Foam or latex handles surface pressure relief. Edge foam rails and transition layers complete the stack. How the bed behaves depends on each layer, not the hybrid label alone.

Why hybrids are layered systems

Calling a mattress a hybrid only means springs and foam-like comfort materials share the same bed. Performance differences come from spring count and gauge, comfort-layer type, and total stack height. In older UK catalogue language the same class is often called a combination mattress.

Budget “hybrids” sometimes use an open-coil core under foam rather than pocket springs. That changes motion transfer and moulding even if the marketing still says hybrid. Read the spring type first.

Typical stack (bottom → top)

  1. Pocket spring core — alignment and vertical airflow paths (see pocket sprung).
  2. Transition foam — smooths the firmness jump into softer comfort layers.
  3. Comfort foam or latex — pressure relief (memory foam or latex).
  4. Quilted cover — initial surface feel.
  5. Edge foam encapsulation — perimeter support for sitting and edge sleeping.

Base compatibility

Hybrids with thick foam comfort layers need adequate slat support (often max ~7 cm gaps) or a solid/divan platform so foam cannot hammock between laths.
