Solid vs Sprung Bed Slats
Entity: bed slats
In short
Slatted bases support a mattress on parallel wooden or composite slats. Solid slats flex very little. Sprung slats are bowed and flex under weight. Slat spacing matters for warranties. Many memory foam and hybrid mattress warranties require maximum gaps around 7 cm. Wide gaps let the mattress sag between slats.
How it works
Measuring the gap correctly
Measure the clear gap between slat edges, not centre-to-centre spacing, unless the manufacturer defines spacing differently. For foam and hybrids, the best spacing is usually as close as the warranty allows — commonly a maximum near 7 cm — rather than making gaps wider to save cost.
Solid vs sprung behaviour
| Slat type | Shape / mount | Under-mattress feel |
|---|---|---|
| Solid | Flat, rigid | Firmer platform |
| Sprung | Bowed, flexible end caps | Adds give under load |
Timber materials (pine vs birch)
| Material | Educational traits |
|---|---|
| Pine | Widely used softwood; adequate when correctly sized; can flex more on long spans |
| Birch / beech / hardwood laminates | Often used for sprung slats; denser grain resists set |
| Engineered / composite | Consistent section; check maker ratings for load |
Material alone does not guarantee support. Section thickness, span length, centre rails and gap matter more for how much the slats bend.
Centre rails on wider frames
Double-and-above frames often add a centre rail down the middle. That keeps slat spans short enough to limit bending under two sleepers.

Frequently asked questions
- Why do mattress warranties mention a 7 cm slat gap?
- Wide gaps let foam and hybrid comfort layers bend into the voids between slats. That concentrates stress and can cause permanent dents. A maximum clear gap near 70 mm (7 cm) is a common UK warranty rule. Always read the specific manufacturer wording.
- Are sprung slats better than solid slats?
- Sprung slats add give beneath the mattress. Solid slats give a firmer platform. Neither is universally better. Match slat behaviour and spacing to the mattress type and warranty rules.
