What causes the smell

Foam mattresses are polymer products. After manufacture and compression shipping, compounds can leave the material into room air until levels drop. Covers, fire barriers, and adhesives can add their own scent.

  1. Unpack in a ventilated room. Open windows when weather allows.
  2. Remove plastic fully. Do not sleep under impermeable packaging.
  3. Allow rolled mattresses to expand fully.
  4. Use a washable protector after the strongest smell has eased if you prefer.
  5. Avoid sealing the mattress in an unventilated bag to “contain” odour. That traps compounds against the foam.
